Why is a license required for mp3 encoding?

Thompson® has patents on mp3 encoding, for each copy of dBpowerAMP we have to pay a patent royalty, this is regardless if a free open source mp3 encoder (like Lame) is used. dBpowerAMP's mp3 encoder (writer) is on a time limited 30 day trial license, this license is purchased through the Power Pack license (a series of enhancements to dBpowerAMP: Faster CD Ripping, Handles Compilation CDs, Preview CDs, ID Tag Editing, DSP Sound Effects and more)...all for $14 [Registration can be made here].

At anytime in dBpowerAMP click or (on the title bar then click on an item on the page) to instantly receive help on a certain area or aspect of dBpowerAMP. After installation dMC Configuration is displayed, for 99.99% of people default values are fine to use dBpowerAMP.

dBpowerAMP is the Swiss army knife of the audio world, pre-loaded with wave & mp3 codecs, other popular codecs (such as ogg, WMA) can be installed with a click of a button (from within dBpowerAMP), in addition practically every Codec ever conceived can be installed from [Codec Central]. dBpowerAMP offers:

7. Editing ID Tags is easy with dBpowerAMP from Windows Explorer. Install 'utility codecs' to arrange audio files based on ID Tag, tag from filename or to update the ID Tag version.
4. dMC Configuration: set advanced configurations, or ID Tag creation options & obtain version information about each dBpowerAMP component (Codec version numbers). 
8. Power Pack: unlock dBpowerAMPs potential with Advanced Options, or DSP effects (such as dithering, Graphic EQ, advanced volume normalize and Karaoke).
